That is the plot in this early 70′s directorial debut for Wes Craven. Before viewing this film I’d heard a lot of hype about it. So I decided to check out what the hype was all about, so I am reviewing it now. The film is somewhat disturbing, but overall it really didn’t live up to all the hype I’d heard about it. I mean the story is very basic, and can be found in nearly all revenge films. I’m sure the film was much more powerful/shocking when it originally came out in the 70′s, but now it just doesn’t have the same effect. Odd that Craven would pick such a controversial film to begin his directing career, but hey apparently it worked out well. The Coroner stalks women who are suicide attempt survivors in a small town. I’m not sure what possessed me to buy, watch and review this film, probably the title. Oh well on with the review…In this flick clips from The Unborn II and Slumber Party Massacre where used, which I found rather interesting. The fact that a serial killer who stalks suicide attempt survivors is twisted and at the same time, not very likely. So it loses points for its believability. The movie only ran about an hour and fifteen minutes, I could tell at some points throughout the film scenes were inserted just as filler. Not a bad body count for a recently released horror film. However this film desperatly needed some over the top gore. Hell, even Some gore would’ve helped. Also character devolopment was pretty non-existant, I’ve seen better form some porno flix. Returning from the 1988 hit(or miss) 976-EVIL, Spike(Patrick O’Bryan) shows up in a small town investigating the slayings by a mysteriously empowered, pizza-faced killer. Spike has a feeling that 976-EVIL, the horoscope line that empowered his cousin Hoax in the first installment, is somehow involved and he teams up with a busty blonde hottie Robin(Debbie James) to discover what’s going on. The killer, Grubeck is the college dean and Robin used to work in his office. Throughout the movie Grubeck sends his astrally projected spirit on murderous sprees while his body sleeps, keeping the police baffled(because Grubeck is in jail). It all builds up to the final confrontation(as always) and it is up to Spike & Robin to rid of the evil. There is a pretty bad-ass semi-truck death that Bride Of Chucky would later steal. Throughout the film there are plenty of stabs at humor which results in scattered chuckles at best. Director Jim Wynorski keeps the film watchable but lame, and he would later go on to making another not-so-good sequel in Ghoulies 4. Watch Carnage and you’ll scream…with laughter! Here we have some old school horror that does not keep the viewer interested in the early going which sets a boring tone already. There are a few gruesome scenes in the film but the stupid plot makes the 80′s film hard to watch. As usual some unintentional humor can be found throughout this flick. Okay, well here is the story of a malevolent kid who becomes a part of a murderous affair in a small town that has it’s secrets. Not much offered here by this blatantly put 1998 direct-to-video piece of crap. For one the story really just doesn’t make enough sense, and we all know that alone is one of the worst signs of a typical “bad” movie. Secondly the film provided nothing but boredom at its’ finest, with the fear factor scraping the bowels of suckdom. Also, there is a total lack of gore, I mean if you’re going to make a boring horror film, at least spice it up with some gore to keep the viewer semi-enticed. Hell, I mean it’s movies like this one that give the horror genre a bad name. Think about it, all the cliched traits of a bad horror flick. It’s boring, not at all redeeming, the plot is thin, the thin plot doesn’t even make sense and to top it all off the acting sucked too. Remake of the 1963 classic here, that revolves around a professor and his three subjects staying in a dark and gloomy “haunted” house to complete a dream analysis experiment. The study goes awry and the student’s endeavor a night full of horrific events, revealing the secrets of the house. First off the movie had an excellent cast going in its’ favor. I mean Catherine-Zeta Jones is like my dream chick in this movie. That’s besides the point but anyhow, the cinematography was cool in this film as well. A cool decapitation takes place as well, but overall the film seemed to totally lack in over the top gore(hence the PG-13). I mean the visuals were fantastic, but I believe the film could’ve used more blood. Not the most interesting plot to work with, but I think they did extremely well with it, I was skeptical at first, after hearing how bad the film was from reviews and even friends. Director Robert Rodriguez(From Dusk Till Dawn) and Scream writer Kevin Williamson use elements from past successful sci-fi classics such as The Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers and combine them equaling a fast paced movie that is quite entertaining. Psycho Cop kills off the partiers one by one in a rather gruesome fashion. Joe Vickers (Psycho Cop) makes this film comical in a dark sort of way, unlike the more serious approach taken by the original Psycho Cop. Decent deaths combined with Vicker’s one-liners and a relatively high body count make this film a fun and entertaining film. However if you watch the film you will encounter horrible acting and a stupid ending(traits of B-Movies). Also Julie Strain is one of the strippers in the film, and it’s always good to see her sexy body in lingerie, as she is one of my favorite femme fatales. As usual Corman focuses in on a big-budget Hollywood moneymaker and makes his own low-budget version(rip-off) of the concept before the idea grows stale. This film obviously isn’t on Jurassic Park’s level, however it does a good job despite its lower budget. This film contains some gnarly gore scenes with dinosaurs slaughtering humans(a.k.a – the reason people watch this series). A long-buried family secret comes back to haunt the present, and a sorority ceremony becomes a real hell night for Kelly Fairchild. Sorority pledge Kelly and some friends get trapped in a department store, and an unknown killer begins to kill them one by one. This above average slasher film was actually better than you might expect. Plenty of skin in this 80′s slasher flick(no surprise there). The film starts out slow as hell, but 45 minutes into it the pace quickens and it becomes quite interesting. There are also some above average killings worth mentioning, nothing totally original but never-the-less not too bad. One flaw was the movie TRIED too hard to draw suspense that wasn’t really needed. At the first of the movie it seemed like it might not be as bad as one would expect, with a few funny moments in the opening minutes. Not long after that the movie’s concept is beaten into the ground. Many “in” jokes that just don’t seem to work(come on people a thug-life Leprechaun?). As the film goes on, the story just gets so stupid, it becomes hard to watch. I’ll admit this film did have its spots(when the bloodthirsty Leprechaun blazes with Ice-T) but overall a sad attempt at a horror flick. They focused in on comedy a lot more than actual horror. The acting, the music, and pretty much the whole film were extremely cheesy and at some points nearly unwatchable. Rob Spera directs this trash; how does this guy take his job seriously? The copper masked killer returns in this extremely low budget indy flick. However this time it is an ex-mental patient that is killing to cash in on the original Mike Strauber’s fame…or is it? This film has a few good deaths throughout, but nothing spectacular. Another thing that bothered me in this film, was the unnecessary amount of plot twists. Way too many, to actually keep up with. It’d be nice if this series would pick ONE theme and run with it. No, having a copper-masked killer in every flick, is not a theme. Horrid acting can be found in this film as well. This is nowhere near the original Truth Or Dare, but it is a step up from Wicked Games. There are only two reasons I would suggest viewing this film. One being for gore. In this third entry of the Amityville series, we have a hack reporter who decides to move into the Amityville house because he believes it’s a complete hoax. He then soon finds out the house really is haunted. Well typical Amityville formula here. Nowhere near as cool as The Amityville Horror or Amityville 2: The Possession. Actually a quite boring and non-redeeming film here. The special effects were obviously low budget, and the acting was passable to say the least. The film’s finale does generate a bit of interest, but not enough to sit down and view the entire movie. What do you expect from a typical haunted house movie that was made in the 1980′s? Not much I would hope, if so be prepared for an extreme disappointment. Four college students score a house to renovate in return they can live there for the semester. Little did they know it would have a doorway to hell in the basement. Can we say recycled? I’ve seen this plot more than once, and usually it results in a suckfest. Not much worthiness from this Roger Corman produced film. Corman needs to get some new ideas, instead of just stealing other plots we’ve already seen too many times. Roy Scheider from Jaws makes top-billing, his acting is nowhere near Jaws, but he is involved in the only cool scene in the film, a brutal face-ripping. Okay first off Ricki Lake starring in a film should be reason enough for the average film viewer to say, “Nope, I am never going to watch that film!”. If only I’d listen to my own advice sometimes, anyhow I watched it for the sole purpose to review it. Traci Lords has a role in this atrocity of a horror flick, and manages to keep her clothes on the entire film! Sam (Evil Dead) Raimi’s brother Ted plays the role of Dennis, the killer. Ted if you are reading this, please never be involved in such a stupid film again. Intruder ruled, this did not. Trapped in a living hell Kris must escape the Warlock or become the ultimate sacrifice for the satanic race. Okay where do I start, how about the Warlock’s new look. Hmm…I’d prefer Julian Sans over Bruce Payne any day. Payne just couldn’t quite fill the evilish Warlock role. Pretty nice throat-ripping early in the film, and a lot of unneeded scenes to draw suspense. This film is a watchable flick, but you are thankful at the movies end as it does get drawn out. Eight teenagers sneak into a furniture store to throw a graduation party…and then they start getting killed off one by one. Despite its’ original name, the film itself is anything but original; a standard by the book slasher film here people. Also the homosexual subplot really wasn’t necessary in my opinion, all it did was make the movie even more homo than it already was, and that my friends isn’t an easy task by any means. Movies like this really do not add anything to a genre that is quite cliched already. I mean what did the director wish to achieve? Apparently it was the 80′s, late eighties for that matter, when everyone was attempting to make a buck off the horror genre. Horrid acting, a crappy killer, and some lame deaths make this one suck pretty bad, that’s a shocker huh? When a college student, Natalie finds herself at the center of a series of sadistic murders seemingly inspired by urban legends she resolves to find the truth about Pendleton’s own legend. The legend was a twenty-five year old story of a student massacre at the hands of an abnormal Psych professor. So Natalie has to try and find out the truth, because she is the main focus of the killer. I thought the whole urban legend killings were somewhat original and interesting to see. The film was pretty entertaining , it does a good job of drawing suspense and there is enough people dying to keep the story rolling on. Well, this film was not as cool as it appeared/sounded so when renting a horror flick please remember Rule #1: Do Not Judge A Film By It’s Cover! Why? Here we have and early eighties slasher flick which revolves around a chainsaw wielding killer stalking chicks at Boston College. He stalks the women so he can create the perfect life-size puzzle of flesh. The film starts off with an excellent opening scene. I mean when there is blood splattering in the first five minutes of the film, that’s usually a good sign. Very exploitative slasher flick that obviously didn’t have much of a budget to work with. The body count is rather low, but each death seems to come painfully wicked, so it makes up for the lack of deaths. Nothing like seeing some chainsaw dismemberment. In this Full Moon tale; five adults are trapped in an abandoned warehouse. While on stakeout, Judith Gray, a tough cop is trapped in the warehouse full of toys. These toys aren’t just ordinary playthings, as they’ve been awakenend to murderous life by a strange tale of darkness, “The Kid”. Each toy feeds on blood, and it is up to Gray and the passing delivery boy, Mark Wayne to stop the Demonic Toys. Wow, where do I start? Charles Band has really outdone himself on this one…How ’bout why the fuck can Full Moon not make cool movies like this one anymore? Sorry about that, see the The Horrible Doctor Bones and you’ll know why I’m so pissed. Anyways, back to the film at hand, the special f/x were noteworthy here, which including face-bitings, shootings and a pretty rad decapitation make this one more than enjoyabale for Full Moon fans. The toys are pretty cool too, an evil-looking Jack-In-The-Box, the viscous Teddy Bear and the hilarious Baby Doll. Nothing like a foul mouth baby toy to set the comedy tone. However the plot is a bit far fetched, but I would still recommend watching this one, if you want a good horror/comedy flick. [click to continue…]
An eccentric millionaire who devoted his life to catching ghosts leaves his sleek, but spirit-infested glass mansion to his widowed nephew and the horror ensues. The actual horror is the plot. It really doesn’t make all that much sense. This is the second Joel Silver/Robert Zemeckis-produced remake of a classic William Castle film. The first being the 1999 hit House on Haunted Hill. And once again we have a movie that just doesn’t live up to the original. Speaking of original, I wish there were some original horror flicks made these days. Anyway the original 13 Ghosts provided much more than this, and if you are going to make a remake, at least follow the original plot, and don’t throw unnecessary crap in it to make it seemingly more interesting and modern. If I see one more horror remake in the future I’m probably going to vomit. These unoriginal bastards in Hollywood need to come up with an original, intelligent horror movie for a change. Back to the movie at hand, not much good to say about this one, the ghosts were about the only redeeming value here. Awesome make-up on the ghosts and design on the house added a cool atmosphere to the film. I’d like to see some action figures made. But besides that, what we have here is your run of the mill modern horror movie that is mindless, and fails to provide adequate entertainment. A few cool gore scenes can be found in this one but there just isn’t enough. What we have here is the story of a couple who hire a nanny to baby-sit their baby. She ends up being a druidess and a threat to the baby’s life because she wants to sacrifice the baby. I know the story probably has you going, “Wow, that movie has to suck”. Well I thought the same thing until I actually gave it a shot. With such low expectations I came to find out this movie was actually good. A lot better than I would’ve ever imagined. Interesting film, that seems to keep the viewer entertained and interested through the entire duration of the movie. Also there are a few creepy scenes involving the forest trees. However the film is far fetched, but the special f/x were quite well including several dismemberments making this one a definite watcher. Now I know this one is not on the same level as Friedkin’s The Exorcist, but give me a break, there aren’t a lot of films that can go toe-to-toe with such a classic. [click to continue…]
